Red Lion Theatre
This was the first known, purpose-built playhouse in London.
There is little evidence that it survived past the summer of 1567 (less than a year). -

The Theatre
This was concidered to be the first theatre to be built in London for the sole purpose of theatrical productions, the first on the series of large public playhouses in London. Built by James Burbage and closed in 1596 because there where problems with the landlord. -
The Rose
This was the 4th in the series of large public playhouses in London.
The lease ran out in 1605 when the theatre was abandoned.
In 1989 the remains of The Rose were threatened to be destroyed. -
The (Old) Globe
The most famous large playhoue in London.
It was built by Shakespeare's playwright company; the 'Lord Chamberlins Men'.
This Globe was destroyed accidentaly on the 29th June 1613 when a fire consumed the buliding, the fire was started by a cannon shot which was fired to mark the entry of the king. -
The Swan Theatre
This was the 5th in the series of large public playhouses in London. In 1615 it was deserted but was used again in 1621 by an unknown company. in 1632 it was described by Nicholas Goodman as 'Now fallen in decay, and, like a dying swan, hangs her head and sings her own derge'. -

DEATH:
Suffered from maleria and stone which is kidney/urinary infection. Death most likely caused by septcimia. -
The (Second) Globe
A second Globe was built on the same site as the previous and was closed in 1642 by puritons. It was pulled down in 1644 to make room for tenements. -

Cromwell banned theatre as he concidered it to be sinfull. it was restored by Charles the 2nd. -
Restoration
During the restoration classic play such as Romio and Juliette were rewritten and given happy endings. -

Georg Büchner
Wrote a famous play 'Woyzeck'
He is a German playwright, Phillosopher and political revelutionary, he was bron in 1813 in Hessen, Germany. He was the sun of a military doctor and studied medicin at uni. Some of his work include 3 dramas: Danton's Death (1835); Leonce and Lena (1836); and The Unfinnished Tradgedy of Woyzech (1837). In his plays he refects pessinism, poverty and pathology and is concidered the forrunner of German expressionism. -
Woyzeck
Incomplete after the death of Georg Büchner, this play was heavily reworked by Karl Emil Franzos, 1879. -
German Expressionism
the term expressionism was used by Herwald Walden in his strongly opinionated magazine Der Sturm. -
Woyzech First Performed
First performed at the Residenztheatre in Munich where it was produced by Max Reinhardt. This was almost 80 years since this was first written. It is speculated that the reason for the large span of time between publication and performance was because of the difficulty in staging sutch short scenes. It was seen that using curtains was impractical; therefore directors are forced to think of alternitive ways of staging. -
