  • Korean War 1950- 1953

    American troops help defend South Korea. Conflict between communist and non-communist forces in Korea. At the end of WWII, Korea was divided at the 38th parallel into Soviet (North Korea) and US (South Korean) zones of occupation. When North Korean forces invaded South Korea, the UN authorized member nations to aid South Korea
  • Bay of Pigs

    US sponsored invasion of Cuba fails. 1,500 Cuban exiles armed and trained by the CIA tried to stage an invasion at Cuba's Bay of Pigs. The small force was crushed by Castro andter President Kennedy refused to involve US armed forces
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    US forces Soviet Union to remove nuclear missiles from Cuba.The Soviet goal was to prevent another US planned invasion by allowing the cubans to use the missiles if needed. An American spy plane took photos of a Soviet nuclear missile site being built in Cuba and President Kennedy planned to bloackade Cuba and threatened to invade unless the soviets agreed to remove their missiles
  • US build up of troops in Vietnam War

  • President Nixon visits China & Soviet Union

    Nixon and Brezhnev sign first Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (SALT). This treaty froze the deployment of intercontiental ballistic missiles and placed limits on antiballistic missiles
  • Paris Peace Accords signed

    This ended the US involvement in Vietnam War. Temporarily stopped the fighting between North and South Vietnam.
  • OPEC places embargo on oil to US

    US supported Israel in the October War
  • US signs treaty

    Signed treaty agreeing to return Canal Zone and control of canal to Panama by 1999. The treaty was the Torrijos- Carter Treaties.

    US establishes full diplomatic relations with China
  • US places embargo on Soviet Union

    In response to Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, US places an embargo on sales of American grain to Soviet Union, boycotts Moscow Olympic games, and delays completion of SALT II

    President Ronald Reagan orders invasion of Grenaada after a Marxist revolution in that Caribbean nation

    American public learns that US secretly sold weapons to Iran in hopes of gaining release of American hostages in Lebanon

    US invades Panama and captures Manuel Noriega. The US broke both the international law and its own government polocies by invading Panama so the could bing Noriega to justice for drug trafficking

    Bush and Gorbachev hold summit in Washington DC. end their 3 day summit, the main topic of discussion was the future of a reunified Germany.
  • Perisan Gulf War

    US led multinational force ends Iraqi occupation of Kuwait. 42 days of relentless attacks by the allied coalition in the air and on the ground, Bush declared a cease-fire
  • Attack on US

    The war on terror. 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremisst group al-Queda hijacked four airliners and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the US. two of the planes were flown into the World Trade Center in NYC, a third plane hit the Pentagon just ousitde Washington DC and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania.
