After garnering his Ph.D., he taught at the universities of Rostock and Kiel from 1911 to 1922. After only teaching a year at Kiel, he assumed the chair of philosophy of Inductive Science at the University of Vienna. He also founded the famous “Vienna Circle,” a school of logical positivists.
  • Vienna Circle

The idea of the Vienna Circle was to have philosophical statements on empirical evidence and more trust in modern science. With other scientists and philosophers, they were united by abstractions of metaphysics and more focus on empiricism. The Circle's reputation grew through books, journals, and manifestos, philosophers around other countries were able to compare their work and become familiar with other scientists who shared the same ideas.

The popularity of the group's writings and ideas helped Schlick receive an invitation from Stanford University in 1929 and another from the University of California-Berkley to become a visiting professor. Schlick took full advantage of being in the US as he gave lectures in many cities, helping spread logical positivism ideas.
  • The end of an Era

The meetings continued but were losing many of its members, who were mostly Jews or had left-wing ideologies fled to safer institutions in Great Britain or the USA after Hitler's rise. On June 22, 1936, Schlick was shot and killed by one of his own students that were mentally insane. After his death, the Vienna Circle was no more. Schlick’s ideas and insights helped create the most influential thoughts in the 20th century.
