Nic is Born
The morning of July 20th, Vicki's contractions began. The sun rose and David and Vicki's beautiful son was born. David and Vicki didn't know the life that Nic was about to live as he grew older. -
Nic in Lake Tahoe
Nic went on a ski trip to Lake Tahoe and brought along his friend Phillip. They decided to mix all the drinks with a little of each, so Nic's parents wouldn't notice. The next morning the two of them were throwing up and Nic's parents figured they just got the flu. -
Nic's 7th Grade
Nic's little brother Jasper was born a few months ago and Nic is entering the 7th grade. As of now Nic has been the perfect son, caring and loving. He loves to play with his little brother Jasper. Then he starts to hang out with some boys who are skaters instead of his old nice friends he used to hang out with. This was the beginning to what would become an addiction. David picks him up one day and smells cigarette smoke on him and Nic admits to taking a few hits. -
Freshman Dean
Karen and David went to the school Nic is attending and talked to the freshman dean again. As soon as they thought Nic was fine. The Dean said Nic was caught buying weed on campus. Nic was given another chance. They then arranged a counselor for Nic who Nic was actually able to relate to very well. -
Nic attends school at a former military academy
Nic attends a school that is on a 115 year old campus that used to be a military academy. Nic is playing on a freshman basketball team at the school. He also is involved in a play at the school. He seems to be hanging out with the right people. -
Nic is Arrested
Nic was arrested because he did not attend his court date for marijuana possession. He never told David about the incident. David ended up bailing him out of jail even after he continues to make the same mistakes. -
Nic goes missing
David calls multiple places trying to find Nic. He is nowhere to be seen. He calls family members asking about Nic. After more than a week, Nic shows up at the house. David tells Nic he needs to go to rehab. -
Nic attends rehab
David forces Nic into getting help for addiction. Nic tried as hard as he could to resist the help. David gives him no choice. So Nic goes to the "Nuthouse". He signs a paper regarding Alcohol and Chemical Recovery Program. It is a 4 week program for Nic. Karen’s friend claims the 4 weeks won't be enough. -
Nic calls back home
After going missing again for a while, Nic finally calls back home from one his ex-girlfriends houses. He claims to be drug free for the last 5 days. David says he can either go to rehab or back to the streets. Nic was beat up and robbed while he was away. Nic seems to be very bipolar. -
Hampshire College
Nic attends Hampshire College after graduating from the 28 program he was forced to do. David is worried about Nic because the college is about 3,000 miles away from home. After 2 rehabs it seems as if Nic may finally be straight. He settles into his dorm at the college. Then he stopped returning phone calls a month later. He had a relapse. -
Nic falls off
Nic starts to contact some family members for help. He has lost everything. He says he is messed up. He stole checks from one of his friend’s mothers. Nic later tries to cash a $500 check on one of David’s closed accounts. Nic's step father calls David telling him that Nic is in the hospital on life support. -
Nic breaks into his parent's home
Karen notices a deadbolt broken on the door of their bedroom. Nic broke into their house. He went through all the drawers and stole from his own family. David and Karen had to close all their accounts and then had to change the locks on all the doors. Nic's addiction is really starting to become out of control to the point he would steal from his own parent’s home. -
Nic goes back to L.A.
David was talking to Vicki and they decided that Nic should go back to Randy. Nic agreed to go back to L.A. to go into the program. Nic realizes that he messed up a lot. -
Nic writes a letter to Jasper
Earlier in the story Nic stole money from his little brother Jasper. Nic wrote a letter now to Jasper. He apologizes to him. He also put the money in the envelope that stole from him. He didn't really know how to say sorry to him, so he tells him that he will be someone that he Jasper can depend on. -
Nic writes a memoir
David wrote an article that ended up being in the New York Times Magazine. Nic was asked to write a memoir about his life. Nic has been committed to being sober. He has finally got his life together and is using his life story to impact others. He wants people to know his story so someone else doesn't make the same mistake as he did.
