High living costs and a shortage in housing caused John to move to PA where he planned to start a tomatoe growing buisness. He was not successful due to the poor weather. In hope to get back to Scotland, John tried to enroll in the war. John was denied because of his weak lungs.

John was diagnosed with Tuberculosis by a doctor at the end of sumemer in 1917. At the time, tuberculosis was a deadly disease and only ten percent of those diagnosed survived. There was no treatment for the disease and complete bed rest was the only known cure. John was discharged from the RNWMP becasue he was no longer able to work. Jessie cared for John over the winter of 1917-1918 and nursed him back to health.

As soon as John and Polly are reunited, their merital relations resume immidiatly. Only a few short days after Polly arrives in Canada, she becomes pregnant for the third time with Johns child. Although John is in love with Jessie and no longer wants to be committed to Polly, it would only cause suspision if John were to reject her. John is not proud or excited about the pregnancy and begins to distant himself from Polly.

John and Polly decided to travel to Blaine Lake to confront Jessie. Polly and John planned to inform Jessie that John is a married man with a family. On the way, John pulls over on the side of the road and shoots Polly in the head with a shotgun. John panics and ends up burying her body under a culvert on the side of the road.

John and Jessie finally get married after months of waiting. Jessie finally settles to marry John before seeing the divorse papers from his past marraige. The couple are married at the Knox Presbyterian manse by Reverend Wylie Clark. At the end of the ceremony, John slipped Polly's gold wedding band on the finger of his new bride, Jessie.
