Doodle's brother is excited for a brother to play with, but he learns that Doodle is disabled and probably wont be able to play or do the things his brother can do. His parents, Aunt Nicey, and the doctor believe that he wont live very long so they build him a coffin and they dont name Doodle.

It's has been three months, and againt all odds, Doodle is alive and thriving. His parents decide that he might live so they name him William Armstrong. When the name doesnt cath on, they start calling him "Doodle" because he crawls backwards like a doodlebug.

Mr. Armstrong (Doodle's father) builds Doodle's brother a go-cart to take Doodle around with. With the go-cart, Doodle's brother brings Doodle to Old Woman Swamp for the first time.

When Doodle is five, his brother started to get embarrassed at Doodle not being able to walk. After a while, Doodle's brother finally teaches Doodle how to walk.

After a long time of practice, on his sixth birthday, Doodle shows his family that he can walk.

Doodle and his brother try to teach Doodle ho to swim, run, climb trees, and fight before school starts.

In the month of May and June there was no rain for the crops, however there was a Hurricane in mid July. This is when Doodle, and his family discover the Scarlet Ibis

Doodle buries the Scarlet Ibis that died soon after Doodle's family spotted it. Aunt Nicey declares that dead red birds are bad luck.

Doodle's brother took him to the pond to learn how to swim when a storm hit

Doodle fell while running from the storm and was left there by his brother

Doodle's brother stops, and turns back around to go back to Doodle. When he gets there he finds Doodle face down kneeling in the brush with blood all over his face
