While stargazing one night on the yacht, Rainsford hears a gunshot and when to the edge of the boat to look to see where it came from. He was leaning over too far and loses his balance and he falls into the water. He swims to the closest island and falls sleep once he is on shore -
Ship-Trap Island
When he wakes up, he begins to walk around the island. He finds a huge mansion and meets General Zaroff who lives there. -
General Zaroff and Rainsford talk about hunting
It turns out that the general likes hunting as well, and they talk about what they think the most dangerous thing to hunt is. General Zaroff claims that he hunts the most dangerous on the island, humans -
General Zaroff's game
General Zaroff has a game that he plays in which he lets a human out into the forest to hide. A few hours later General Zaroff goes to find him. If the General finds him within 3 days he wins, If the general doesn't find him he loses. General Zaroff wants to play this game with Rainsford, but he refuses. Finally the general forces Rainsford to play the game with him because he threatens Rainsford with consequences if he doesn't. He wants to test his hunting skills against Rainsford's. -
Rainsford vs. General Zaroff
Rainsford goes out into the forest and a few hours later the general goes out to find him. Rainsford left a winding path but the general was still able to follow it, and although General Zaroff knew the general location of Rainsford, he smiled and went back home to rest till the next day. Rainsford decides to set a trap for General Zaroff. -
The Burmese tiger pit-- the second trap
When General Zaroff comes again he brings one of his dogs. Rainsford had set another trap this time a hole with sharpened sticks at the bottom. One of the general's dogs falls into it and dies. General Zaroff congratulates Rainsford of his cleverness again and tells him he will be back again. -
The Malay man-catcher-- the first trap
When the general comes back to find him the next day, he is about to set off the trap Rainsford had made but at the last second he leaps back, but not quick enough. A tree crashes down and sticks the general a blow on the shoulder. He calls out to Rainsford for his cleverness of the trap and turns to go back home to have his wound dressed. -
General Zaroff, Ivan, and the dogs come to find Rainsford
The next day the general comes looking for Rainsford with Ivan and all of his dogs. Rainsford sets a small trap set with a knife and he kills Ivan with it. But the dogs still come looking for Rainsford, So Rainsford keeps moving farther on into the forest until he comes to the sea. He has no choice when he hears the dogs coming behind him so he jumps in. The general loses Rainsford and goes back home -
Back at the mansion, Rainsford wins the game
General Zaroff is back at the house eating his dinner and he didn't find Rainsford within the 3 days, Rainsford had been hiding behind the curtains and comes out. The general was surprised to see him but congratulated him for winning the game. Rainsford gets to sleep in the generals bed because he won.
