    Japanese troops landed in South Thailand and at Kota Bahru (northern-eastern Malaya). When the Japanese landed at those places, the invasion began.

    Two battleships, the Repulse and the Prince of Wales, were sunk by Japanese fighter planeson the east coast of Malaya. This event was the worst naval disaster of the war. After this, the British stopped their battleships from stopping the Japanese from landing along the east coast of Malaya.

    The Battle of Jitra
    It was raining very hard in Jitra (in Kedah), but the Japanese tanks still fought with the British. The Japanese tanks moved so fast that the British forces were surprised.The Japanese were also trained very well in jungle warfare. The british outnumbered the Japanese, but they were no match for them. British orders were unclear, which caused the British to step out and leave behind their weapons, food, vehicles and ammunition which the japanese used.

    Before the Fall of Penang, the Japanese bombed the island. The japanese planes took Penang's airfield and other airfields in north-western Malaya. The japanese seized the ships and boats at the Penang harbor and then later used them as coastal landings on the west coast of Malaya.

    At Slim River in Perak, the British fought against the Japanese but lost. The Britist tried to use anti-tank guns to destroy the Japanese troops but that didn't work. The Japanese had a large ammount of food, ammunition and equipment. The Battle of Slim River was a major victory for the japanese and a major defeat for the british.

    Japanese troops entered Kuala Lumpur without the British stopping them much. On the railways of Kuala Lumpur, the Japanese found trains filled with food and ammunition. The japanese seized freshly printed military maps of Singapore which was meant to be for the British but instead the Japanese took it.

    The Battle of Gemas
    At Gemas, Johor, the Australian and Indian soldiers that are allies with Singapore tried to stop the Japanese from coming to Singapore. They put explosives on a wooden bridge and the Australian commander waited until most of the Japanese soldiers were on the wooden bridge before he blew it up. This was a victory for the Australian soldiers, because lots of Japanese soldiers were killed. But this did not last long because the Japanese started to maake coastal landings on the west coast of Johor.

    The British, Indian and Australian units from different parts of Johor withdrew to Singapore. The british realized that Malaya lost so the British troops blew up te Causeway. They blew it up so the Japanese couldn't come to Singapore.
