Vicky's contractions began after midnight. The intervals were clocked. When Vicky is ready to give birth she and her husband, David dart to the hospital and The Beautiful Boy is born! -

Divorce
Nic's parents got divorced, and obviously for any young child that is very difficult. Of course you can never pin point the cause of drug addiction, but this even definitely didn't make his life easier. Not having his mom for the whole school year, and having to leave his school friends in the summer put a toll on him. -
Nic starts Pre-School
This is an important chapter in Nic's life as he is now 3, and attending school. He meets people. This is when David notices some of Nic's natural talents, when Nic constructs sprawling block, Duplo, and Lego Lilliputs. -
Nic begins Kindergarten
Kindergarten is an important time for Nic. He not only show some of his skills such as his creativity in clay, and finger-paint, but also meets a group of friends. Some friends that he hangs out with at Golden Gate Park, and others builds Lego cities and races Hot Wheels -
4th Grader
Nic is now a 4th grader and a stellar person. He plays little league and not only plays but the other kids look at him like the leader of the team. He is also casted for a car commercial! -
Alcohol
Nic and his friend tried alcohol in Lake Tahoe. They mixed a bunch of different kids so no one would notice. Nic claimed he didn't like it. His friend Phillip was sick the next morning and David and Karen thought it was the flu. -
Nic "puffs" a Cigarette
Nic is now a 7th grader. Nic entered his father's car and smelled like smoke, he claimed it was just the kids he was around but then admitted that he took a few puffs. -
The Devil's Lettuce
Only a few days after the cigarette incident, David accidently found a small back of Marijuana in Nic's backpack. Nic claimed it was the first time he and his friend bought and tried it. -
Caught on Campus
Nic is now a freshman in high school, playing on the school basketball and now apparently having a smart group of friends. Nic also loves his teachers. David received a phone call from the dean that Nic bought Marijuana on campus. Nic got a second chance from the dean and was put on probation. -
Junior Year
Junior year is very strong for Nic. He has good friends, with whom they have conversation about politics, the environment and social issues. Nic also submits his columns to Ernest Hemingway Writing Award for high school journalists, and wins first place. Nic also was encouraged by his French teacher to apply at a summer program in Paris, and he did. -
Senior Year
Nic is now a senior. He is different after Paris. The ulcer he got was most likely from heavily drinking and some drugs. David knew something was wrong when he got off the plane. As a senior Nic cuts class, and hangs out with a bad crowd. He also quit swimming and the newspaper. -
College
Nic began college at University of California, Berkeley. He was very excited at first mostly about his painting class, but then college hit him. Nic complained about a lot about college such as the fact he thinks professors are morons. Then he stops returning David's calls regularly, eventually leading to a call from Nic's roommate that he hasn't shown up in a few days. -
Something a parent should never hear
Nic is back from college and is working. One night Nic misses his curfew and obviously David is beyond worried. David cannot sleep and his worry gets the best of him, this lasts for 4 days. Then Nic calls David and tells him where he is. David made an appointment for him to go to rehab which Nic refused. That is also when David found out his son was using Crystal Meth. -
Rehab
David forces Nic to go to an Oakland rehab center, but they do not thenk they can help him. David found a new place called Ohlhoff Recobery in San Francisco. Nic begins a twenty-eight day program at Ohlhoff. After three days at the rehab, Nic calls and begs to come home. -
Staring death in the face
Nic went to New York to detox with Vicky's old family friends. He moved into an apartment in Brooklyn and got a job. Nic told David he wants to do it on his own this time. To David's despair Nic overdosed and was on life support. -
Re-Rehab
Nic goes to another rehabilitation clinic named Herbert house. Nic becomes good friends with the other patients, and gets an AA sponsor whom Nic really likes and looks up to. Nic gets a job at Promises, a place where he can help other people get over their addictions. -
Part of recovery is relapse
David calls Nic and finds out that Nic has relapsed. He was using speedballs and meth. David tells Nic he needs help then Nic hangs up. David knows it takes two years for an addict to fully recover, Nic has never made it to two years of being drug free.
