John Dewey was born on October 20 1859 in Burlington, Vermont. His parents were Archibald Dewey and Lucina Artemisia Rich. He was the third child born and he had three other siblings.

After his cousin resigns from his position as principal of the seminary, John Dewey's position as a teacher is also terminated.

After losing his job at the seminary, John Dewey moved back to Vermont to teach at a private school. In his spare time he would read philosophical treaties and talk about them with his former teacher. His love for the topic drove him to further his studies at John Hopkins, there he majored in philosophy and psychology.

After he received his doctrine from John Hopkins in 1884, John Dewey was hired as an assistant professor at the University of Michigan where he later met his wife and got married.

John Dewey and his wife start their first experimental elementary school at the University of Chicago, this school was meant to practice John Dewey theories about education. Dewey's goal was to provide a, "universal education" for student so they would, "abandon their habits and think creatively", (Biography). Dewey later resigned from his position at the University of Chicago when his wife was laid off.
