    He was born in the Kingdom of Württemberg which was in the German empire. His dad's name was Herman and his mom's name as Pauline. A year later they moved to Munich.

    His uncle came to visit him when he was ten and brought him two books that sparked his love for science: Immanuel Kant's Critique of Pure Reason and Euclid's Elements.

    He and his future wife both attended Polytechnic, a science and math college. in 1905 he was awarded the Zurich Polytechnic teaching diploma.
