The Great Gatsby

  • Nick meets the Buchanan's

Nick begins renting a little house in West Egg next to Jay Gatsby's mansion. Shortly after, an old friend of Nick's, Tom Buchanan, invites him over for dinner. There Nick reconnects with his cousin Daisy and meets her attractive friend Jordan Baker, who is a professional golfer.
"I drove over there to have dinner with the Tom Buchanans. Daisy was my second cousin once removed and I’d known Tom in college." (Fitzgerald,8)
  • The Secret Apartment

While at dinner, Tom offers Nick an invitation to his apartment in New York City for business. Tom pressures Nick to accept. On the way, Tom and Nick meet George and Myrtle Wilson in the Valley of Ashes. Tom speaks with Myrtle behind George's back and tells her to get on the next train possible to New York. Tom's apartment is used as a party pad. After a night of drinking, Tom and Myrtle get in an argument because Myrtle mentions Daisy. Tom hits Myrtle.
  • The Party

After a few weeks in West Egg and lots of rumors about Gatsby and his parties, Nick gets invited to one of Gatsby's parties. While at the party, Nick wonders where Gatsby is and why he isn't out enjoying his own party. Nick then meets with Jordan Baker and they decide to venture out and try and find Gatsby. They go to the library to find Owleyes. Owleyes is in awe of how Gatsby's library is actually made of books (shows the wealth). On their way back, Nick finds and meets Gatsby.
  • The Rekindling

Following the party, Gatsby invites Nick to lunch in the city with Gatsby's best friend Meyer Wolfshiem. There Gatsby also meets Tom. Now in a relationship, Jordan tells Nick that Gatsby and Daisy were in love for five years at some point. So Nick decides to have Daisy over and Gatsby to just "stop by" his house.
  • The (Good) Affair

After the meeting between Gatsby and Daisy, they begin their affair. Daisy and Tom are also invited to the second party Gatsby throws in the book. Tensions flare as Gatsby and Daisy plan to reveal their affair to Tom. Daisy begins to be hesitant, but Gatsby blurts it out. Tom then fires back on Gatsby by saying he made his riches from crime. This breaks Daisy's heart as she stays with Tom.
  • The Murders

On the way back from the hotel in the city, Daisy drives home in Gatsby's car. While driving, Daisy runs over Myrtle (premeditated or not) and kills her on spot. Word goes around about this incident, but people think it's Gatsby because of his car. To protect Daisy, Gatsby takes the fall. Tom then tells George that Gatsby killed his wife. George sneaks into Gatsby's yard and shoots Gatsby, then turning the gun on himself. To avoid the mess, Tom and Daisy move to the midwest.

    The Funeral

The only people to come to Jay Gatsby's funeral was Nick, Gatsby's father, and Owleyes. None of the people who always went to his parties attended. The police report for the murder surfaced and their was no trace of any affairs or the Buchanan's in the report. Later on in October, Nick meets with Tom in Manhatten, where Tom confesses to Nick about him telling George that Gatsby killed his wife.
  • The Move

To avoid the drama that the Eggs and NYC bring, Nick moves back to the midwest.
