Founded
The Family International was founded in Huntington Beach, California in 1968 by David Berg, a former Christian, and Missionary pastor. -
The First Move
Berg predicted that California would be hit by a major earthquake. Berg took his followers, a group of "born-again hippies" and moved to various cities, spreading the word by proselytizing. -
Growth of TFI
By 1972, The Family International had 130 communities all over the world. TFI had spread to 70 countries with 10,000 full-time members. -
Letter from Berg
David Berg wrote multiple letters called "The Mo Letters." In a 1972 letter, Berg states he was a prophet. Members began fleeing to Europe, Latin America, and East Asia after Berg convinced them that God was going to destroy the United States. -
Flirty Fishing
Berg began a new method of converting members called "flirty fishing." This encouraged female members to prove their love of God by having sex with potential members. -
Rebrand
The Family International was originally named "Children of God" until Berg changed the name to The Family of Love. -
Rebrand II
Berg wanted to emphasize the care placed on children within the group and renamed it "The Family." -
David Berg Dies
David Berg passes away and Karen Zerby assumes leadership. -
The Love Charter
The Love Charter is established and defined the rights and responsibilities of The Family. -
Rebrand III: The Family International
The Familly was renamed "The Family International."
