  • Summit in Geneva, Switzerland

    A meeting of "The Big Four which consisted of President Dwight D. Eisenhower of the United States, Prime Minister Anthony Eden of Britain, Premier Nikolai A. Bulganin of the Soviet Union, and Prime Minister Edgar Faure of France. The purpose was to bring together world leaders to begin discussions on peace. , the talks were influenced by the common goal for increased security.

    Fall of the Berlin Wall
    Berlin Wall was a barrier constructed by the German Democratic Republic that completely cut off West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin.Around 5,000 people attempted to escape over the wall, with an estimated death toll of over 100. "The Berlin Wall wasn't the only barrier to fall after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War. Traditional barriers to the flow of money, trade, people, and ideas also fell."

    Flexible diplomacy adopted by Nixon that sought to ease tensions between the US and the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China. Détente ended after the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan, which led to the United States boycott of the 1980 Olympics in Moscow

    The Solarity Movement is a Polish non-governmental trade union that began at the Lenin Shipyards and was founded by Lech Walesa. In the early 1980's, it becamse the first independent labor union in a soviet-block country.

    President Ronald Reagan delivered an address to a meeting of the National Association of Evangilcals in Orlando, Florida. It involved communism as the " focus of evil in the modern world" and later was known as the '"Evil Empire Speech"

    Strategic Defense Initiative ("Star Wars")
    Proposed by Ronald Reagan to use ground-based and space-based systems to protect the United States from attack by strategic nuclease ballistic missiles. The Strategic Defense Initative Organization was set up in 1984 within the United States Department of Defense to oversee the Strategic Defense Initiative.

    On June 12, 2987 President Ronald Reagan spoke at The Brandenburg Gate in West Berlin. He demanded that this twelve-foot concrete wall come down. It extended for a hundred miles, surrounding West Berlin, and included electrified fences and guard posts. " Behind me stands a wall that encircles the free sectors in this city, part of this vast systems of barriers that divides the whole continent of Europe."

    Agreement between the United States and the Soviet Union, signed by President Ronald Reagan and General Secretary Mikhail. This Treaty eliminated nuclear and conventional ground- launched ballistic cruise missiles

    -Perestroika was a political movement for reformation within the Communist Party of the Soviet Union during the 1980s.
    - Glasnost was a policy that called for increased openness in government institutions.
