    -Nixon visited Moscow and signed many contracts with Brezhnev.
    -Purpose was to create a period of time for calm during the tension between the US and USSR from the Cold War.
  • Ronald Reagan addresses the National Association of Evangelicals

    -During the speech, he coined the term Evil Empire in describing the USSR
    -Speech mainly discussed moral conflicts, such as how the USSR would underlay democracy
  • Summit in Geneva, Switzerland

    -Meeting between & Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev in Geneva Switzerland
    -Talked about international diplomatic relations and the Arms Race
  • Reagan speech at Brandenberg Gate, West Berlin

    -Reagan attempted to tell Mikhail Gorbachev to destroy the Berlin Wall
    -Given on the 750th anniversary of Berlin, at the bridge near the wall.
    -Quoted newspaper headline "Tear Down the Wall!"
  • Reagan and Gorbachev sign INF Treaty

    -Treaty which eliminated nuclear and conventional ground launched ballistic and cruise missiles within intermediate range
    -Put into affect June 1, 1988
  • Fall of the Berlin Wall

    -Not fully torn down
    -People came with hammers and similar tools to break off and take chunks of the wall (Manerspecht)
  • Fall of Soviet Union

    -Leaders of multiple countries of the USSR met a few days earlier and stated their desire to no longer be apart of the Soviet Union.
  • Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan

    -Soviet Russia sent thousands of of troops into Afghanistan and took control of the government and politics in cities like Kabul
    -Began the decade long attempt by Moscow to subdue the Aghanistan civil war and maintain a friendly socialist government
