    Detente was a flexible diplomacy to ease tentions between the United States, USSR, and Peoples Republic of China. It was a new approch to the war efforts in order to be peaceful and end the Cold War.

    Soviet invasion of Afghanistan

    It was a war fought between Soviet-led Afghan forces against multi-national insurgent groups called the Mujahideen. The Soviets won and the war resulted in millions of Afghans fleeing their country, mostly to Pakistan and Iran. Hundreds of thousands of Afghan civilians were killed.
  • Solidary Movement in Poland

    Solidarity was a broad anti-bureaucratic social movement, using the methods of civil resistance to advance the causes of workers' rights and social change. Lech Walesa controlled the Gdańsk Shipyards and was the co-founder of the Solidary Movement or independent trade union from the communists.

    This speech is known as Ronald Regan's "evil empire" speech. In this speech, he calls The Soviet Union out and says that they are evil and turnng the world evil. In this, he explains why the US in in the cold war. This is also when Ronald says that the US should just forget aout the detante doplomacy

    Strategic Defense Initiative
    This program was to develop a sophisticated anti-ballistic missile system in order to prevent missile attacks from other countries, specifically the Soviet Union. This program was also known as "Star wars" for its abstract ideas, some of which included lasers.

    Perstroika and Glasnost

    Perestroika is the reconstruction of the political and economic system. It de-monopolization and allowed for some semi-private businesses. This would end the goverments control on prices.
    Glasnost was the name for the social and political reforms allowed more rights and freedoms for the Soviet people. it allowed rights such as freedoms of speech.

    The Regan and Gorbachev met for the first time to talk about international diplomatic relations and the arms race. This talk didnt have a major outcome and have many other meeting to follow it up.

    Reykjavik Summit, Iceland
    It was a meeting between Reagan and Gorbachev to negotiate the use and making of nuclear weapons.This meeting resulted in the intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty between the United States and the Soviet Union.

    In West Berlin, President Regan went to the wall and made this speech ordering Gorbacev to tear down the Berlin Wall.

    Reagon and Gorbachev signed this treaty to eliminate nuclear and conventional ground - launched ballistic and Cruise missles.
    "In accordance with the provisions of this Treaty which includes the Memorandum of Understanding and Protocols which form an integral part thereof, each Party shall eliminate its intermediate-range and shorter-range missiles, not have such systems thereafter, and carry out the other obligations set forth in this Treaty."
