    Nixon wanted less Nuclear weapons and more trade to happen between the USA and the Soviet Union. Detente is a French word meaning a relieve of tension.

    The War in Afghanistan lasted for 10 years and ended in 1989. Moscow tried to control the Afghan civil war and maintain a friendly and socialist government on its border.

  • Strategic Defense Initiative ("Star Wars")

    The intent of this program was to develop a sophisticated anti-ballistic missile system in order to prevent missile attacks from other countries, specifically the Soviet Union. The lasers that are used to interfer with the missles were supposed to cancel out the missles were to be located in space, referring to the "star wars".
  • Gorbachev, Perestroika, Glasnost

    Gorbachev's dual program of “perestroika” (“restructuring”) and “glasnost” (“openness”) introduced profound changes in economic practice, internal affairs and international relations. Gorbachev’s revolutionary program swept communist governments throughout Eastern Europe from power and brought an end to the Cold War.
  • Summit of Geneva, Switzerland

    The Geneva Summit was brought together to try and get world peace between the major global powers. The "Big Four" that was there was Dwight D. Eisenhower, Anthony Eden of Britain, Nikolia A. Bulganin of the Soviet Union, and Edgar Faure of France.

    The meeting talked about limiting Nuclear Weapons between the US and the Soviet Union. The talks collapsed at the last second but in the end the treaty was signed between the two countries in 1988.

    The INF Treaty stands for the "Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. It was signed in Washington, DC and it eliminated nuclear and conventional ground-launched ballistic and cruise missiles with intermediate ranges.

    Fall of the Berlin Wall
    On November 9th, 1989, the Berlin Wall fell and the end to the cold war was almost near. Citizens were able to travel between East and West Berlin as they pleased so citizens of the West went back to the free East side to reunite with there families. David Hasselhoff sang Looking for Freedom as families reunited and the wall fell.

    In December of !991 the Soviet Union split into 15 different seperate countries. The Cold War had ended and the United States came out as the "super-power" of the world.
