    US foreign policy to try and ease tensions between the USSR and USA. They signed treaties call SALT I and SALT II to limmit firepower.
  • Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan

    They wanted a country with abilities to get oil from the Gulf, Afghanistans government had been over thrown and were vaulnerable to the taking over of another country. The Soviets invaded and started to make reforms within Afghannistan.
  • Solidarity Movement in Poland

    Poland became the first satilite nation to break away from the Communist party, they because the first non-communist country to controlled trade union under the Warsaw Pact. The United States provided finanicial support for them.
  • Reagan Adresses the National Association of Evangelicals

    Reagan adressed them and called communism "the focus of evil in the modern world." This was later called his Evil Empire Speech.
  • Strategic Defense Initiative "Star Wars"

    The goal was to use ground-based and space-based systems to protect the United States from attack by strategic nuclear ballistic missiles. People said it was unrealistic because of the technology they had at the time.
  • Gorbachev, Perestroika, Glasnost

    Perestroika was the restructuring of the Soviet political and economic system and allowed for more independent action. Glasnost was a policy that called for increased openness and transparency in gov institutions and activities in the Soviet Union.
  • Summit in Geneva, Switzerland

    Reagan and Gorbachev's first time meeting in Geneva to discuss international relations and the arms race. They were trying to prevent WWIII from happening. Gorbachev said "We viewed the Geneva meeting realistically, without grand expectations, yet we hoped to lay the foundations for a serious dialogue in the future."
  • Reykjavik Summit, Iceland

    A meeting between the USSR and USA about the missiles each country had.The talks fell apart at the end of the conversation. Reagan asked Gorbachev “you would turn down a historic opportunity because of a single word?"
  • Ronald Reagan speech at Brandenberg Gate, West Berlin

    "Tear down this wall!" was Reagans famous quote when he was in Berlin trying to get he Berlin wall torn down. He stood between 2 sheets of bulllet proof glass to prevent snipers from East Berlin from killing him.
  • Reagan and Gorbachev sign INF Treaty

    The Treaty made both the USA and USSR destroy their Missles that were adressed. A total of 2,692 of such weapons had been destroyed, 846 by the U.S. and 1,846 by the Soviet Union.
  • Fall of the Berlin Wall

    East Germany announced they will allow East Berlin people to travel to West Berlin. People rushed to the gate, and then the check points opened and people got to reunite with their loved ones.
  • Fall of the USSR

    People who wanted a coup d’etat kidnapped Gorbachev, and then, on August 19 of 1991, they announced on state television that Gorbachev was very ill and would no longer be able to govern. The country went into an uproar. Russia split into 15 different places and the USSR began to fall apart.
