  • Richard Nixon & Policy of Detente

    After Tet Offensive, Nixon began to pursue detente with the Soviet Union and the rapproachment with China. He hoped this would isolate the North Vietnamese from the larger communist powers. The Detente led to nuclear arms reduction.

    Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan
    They wanted a country with abilities to get oil from the Gulf, Afghanistans government had been over thrown and were vaulnerable to the taking over of another country. The Soviets invaded and started to make reforms within Afghannistan.

    The Solidarity Movement was a trade union federation that was under the leadership of Lech Walesa. This union was the frist trade union that was not communist controlled within the country. The U.S. was a supporter of the union and eventually the group became a threat to the governent, causing the government to negotiate with them.

    Was a plan to help stop any missles that th esoviets may launch. Many thought that the plan was unrealistic and thought it sounded like something from a movie.

  • Summit in Geneva, Switzerland

    Reagan and Gorbachev's first time meeting in Geneva to discuss international relations and the arms race. They were trying to prevent WWIII from happening. Gorbachev said "We viewed the Geneva meeting realistically, without grand expectations, yet we hoped to lay the foundations for a serious dialogue in the future."
  • Reykjavik Summit, Iceland

    The Reykjavik Summit was a metting held between Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev to discuss nuclear weapons. This meeting ended with no real agreement between the two leaders, but the progress that was made at this meeting helped lead to the creation of the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty between the United States and Soviet Union.

  • Gorbachev, Perestroika, Glasnost

    Gorbachev was elected the first executive president of the Soviet Union. Gorbachev created a dual program of Perestroika and Glasnost, which introduced large changes in the economic practice, internal affairs and international relations. These programs inadvertently helped lead to the end of the cold war and the fall of the Soviet Union.
