    HUAC, also known as House of Un-American Activities Comittee, was a group that investigated communist or "un-american" doings. Was really popular and known during the times of McCarthyism and the Hollywood Ten Trials.
  • The Yalta Conference

    The Yalta Conference
    The Yalta Conference lasted for about a week. The Big Three(Stalin, Churchill, FDR) attended the meeting. It was a conference to discuss the end of WWII and plans for peace. They eventually agreed to divide Germany in to four sections. The Soviets gained east germany through this. Notes

    The CIA was created to help inform the President and government. The CIA also did spy work and tracked foreign affairs.
  • Truman Doctrine

    The Truuman Doctrine gave economic and military aid to free nations threatened by internal or external opponents.
  • Marshall Plan

    and NotesThe Marshall Plan was a plan that the United States will supply economic aid to European nations to help them rebuild after WWII.

    The Hollwood Ten was trials set in Hollywood. The prosecuters were HUAC. This was a group of ten peopke in the movie industry, that were accused and convicted for being involved in un-american activities.

    Berlin Airlift

    The Berlin Airlift was the United States' response to the Berlin Blockade. The United States flew supplies into East Berlin for a year, making about 300,000 flights a day.
  • North Atlantic Treaty Organization

    NATO was the United States first time to form an alliance with countries in peace time. The alliance consisted of West European Allies, the United States, and Canada. Twelve members pledged to this alliance.

    Vietnam War

    The Vietnam War was a war between communist and democrats. South Vietnam opposed communism, but North Vietnam was tring to take over the south and transform their government. As a result, the United States assisted the South Vietnamese people. The United States goal being containment. The war ended with the U.S and Vietnam signing a ceize fire and having many peace talks. The United States and the Southern Vietnamese people had lost more people and soldiers than they had bargained for.

    and NotesThe Warsaw Pact was formed as a responce to NATO. This alliance system consisted of the Soviets and its seven satellites.

    The Space Race was a compettion between the Soviets and the United States. Each superpower wanted to prove it power and advancement in technology. Each superpower wanted to be the first to explore space and gain control over space.

    NASA is Born
    As a part of the Space Race NASA was launched. NASA was used for the research and for scientists to reach past the limits of the sky in order to defeat the Soviets in the Space Race.
  • Nuclear Arms Race

    It was just a race between the two superpowers in a nuclear war. The two superpowers did not want to have to go into nuclear war. So each power made many bigger and better nuclear war weapons to try and scare their ooponent.

    The CIA was informed to create and operate a U2 plane. They flew it over Soviet territory. The plane was shot down and the pilot was taken to be a prisoner. The United States and Eisenhower wrote a letter to the Soviets saying that the CIA did it without him knowing about it.
  • Bay of Pigs

    Bay of Pigs
    The Bay of Pigs was an unsuccessful attempt by the United States to overthrow the communist goernment of Cuba. We wanted to overthrow the communist leader Fidel Castro. The United States planned this. The New York Times magazine talked about the training of soldiers for the attack. As a result, when it came time to attack the United States didn't follow through with using their air fighters. .

    NotesThe Soviet Union's reaction to the Bay of Pigs was the Cuban Missle Crisis. The Missle crisis was the closest the United States and Soviets came to nuclear war. The Soviet Union sent missles to Cuba. As a result, the United States set up an embargo and had spies flying over Cuba taking pictures of the missle scandal. The Soviet Union eventually pulled back because of the blockade. The Cuban Missle Crisis alarmed the United Stated so badly because of Cuba's unfortunate closeness to American land

    In 1965 the escalation in Vietnam really increased due to President Johnson being elected and the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. In June there were 75,000 troops stationed in Vietnam.
  • Tet Offensive

    Tet Offensive
    A series of surprised attacks by the Vietcong. The North and South decided that there would be no fighting on this day of "Tet" or bringing in the new year. The North betrayed their promise and did many surprise attacks in the South, leaving the South unprepared and bombarded. This was a major turning point in the Vietnam War.

    During the Space Race, the United States had a victory. We landed the first man on the moon. Neil Armstrong was on thhe moon for 21 hours. This was a major advancement in the space race for the United States.
