  • Air-traffic Controller's Strike

    On August 3, 1981, almost 13,000 air traffic controllers went on strike due to the poor working conditions of the FAA(Federal Aviation Ageny). They demanded more pay and shorter work weeks.
  • Equal Access Act

    This act was passed in order to rid widespread religious discrimination in public schools. This law was sparked by the Supreme Court Case of "Westside Community School District v. Mergens".
  • Iran-Contra Scandal

    This affair began when President Reagan's administration supplied weapons to Iran, a sworn enemy, in attempt to secure the release of American hostages in Iran.
  • Gramm-Rudman-Hollings Act

    This act called for automatic spending cuts if the president and Congress failed to reach established targets.
  • Westside Community School District v. Mergens

    A group of students in the school district were denied the right to form a Christian club with the same privileges of normal clubs. The court decided that the school district had the right to deny the club.
  • Reno v. ACLU

    This case argued that provisions of the Communications Decency Act outlawing pornographic pictures or messages was unlawful. The court decided that it was unlawful, in violation of First Amendment rights.
  • Mitchell v. Helms

    Public school parents argued that Chapter 2 of the Educational Consolidation and Improvement Act violated the First Amendment Establishment Clause. However, the Supreme Court disagreed saying that Chapter 2 is not a law respecting an establishment of a religion.
  • Bush v. Gore

    This was regarding the 2000 presidential election where Al Gore asked for a hand counting of over 9,000 ballots in Miami-Dade County. The Supreme Court ruled that their methods for recounting ballots was unconsitutional.
