    With the surrender of General Duong Van Minh and his cabinet in the Presidential palace in Saigon, the war that started on September 26, 1959, finally came to an end on April 30, 1975. The communist forces of North Vietnam won the war in which every party suffered huge losses. Almost 5 million Vietnamese died.
  • Soviet invasion of Afghanistan (blue)

    The Soviets invaded Afghanistan in December 1979. It entered the country to support the Soviet-backed Afghan communist government in its ongoing conflict with anti-communist Muslim guerrillas, also known as the mujahedeen. The Soviets began their withdrawal from Afghanistan in May of 1988 and were fully withdrawn by February 15, 1989.
