    The Yalta Conference
    After World War ll came to a close they still needed to decide what to do with Germany. The United States as well as the Soviet Union both attended the Yalta Conference to discuss Germany’s fate. At the end of this conference they decided to split up Germany. East Germany was then under the control of the Soviet Union and made into a communist nation.
  • Forming of NATO

    Forming of NATO
    On April 14, 1949 twelve Western Nations signed the North Atlantic Treaty. This provides support to any event of a military attack on any nation that signed this treaty. Staring members if NATO were Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

    On August 29, 1949 the Soviet Union had their first successful attempt with an Atomic Bomb. The United States called it Joe 1. Now in the world there are three countries who have the backing of the atomic bomb, including the United States.

    On June 25, 1950 the Korean War Begins. North Korea decides to invade South Korea. The United States steps in to help South Korea and wants stop the spread of communism.

    In March 29, 1951 the Rosenberg’s were executed by the United States. The United States accused them of being spies for the Soviet Union. They were spreading the United States secrets for the atomic bomb to the Soviet Union.

    The Korean War ended on July 27, 1953 because both the North and South Korea agreed to stop fighting in the war. The country still remains divided and North Korea still continued on being communist.
  • Nikita Khrushchev

    Nikita Khrushchev
    On September 7th 1953 Nikita Khrushchev became the new leader of the Soviet Union when Joseph Stalin died. Joseph Stalin died on March 5th 1953 and there was a fight after his death to see who would take over the position. Khrushchev, a communist, ends up on top and becomes the new leader of the Soviet Union.

    In December of 1956 a similar incident to the Korean War took place. North Vietnam invades South Vietnam. North Vietnam is run by communism and South Vietnam is not. The United States, once again, will eventually get involved to try and stop the spread of communism.

    January 1, 1959 Fidel Castro became the new president of Cuba. A revolution occurred right before he became president that killed the president before him, Fulgencio Batista. It is not known that Cuba is communist, but eventually Cuba becomes allies with the Soviet Union.

    The United States is very against communism so on April 17, 1961 they decided to try and invade Cuba. They decided to make this attempt at the Bay of Pigs. This turns out to be a failed mission. Castro stays in control of Cuba and keeps Cuba communist.

    On August 13, 1961 the Soviet Union builds a large wall that divides Berlin. They built this wall dividing the East side of Germany with the West side. People who happen to live on the East side are not allowed to go over to the West side.

    On October 16, 1962 the United States discovered something terrible. They discovered that the Soviet Union had placed missiles in Cuba 90 miles away from the United States. John Kennedy held the presidency of the United States during this tense time. After thirteen days of negotiation Khrushchev agreed to remove the missiles.

    On August 4, 1964 President Lyndon Johnson made a claim that the United States ships were fired on in Vietnam. This was all it took for the United States to finally step in and get involved in the Vietnam War.

    North Vietnam, somehow, took over Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam. This causes North Vietnam to win the Korean War. The United States was displeased with this outcome. The country now is united as communists.

    On March 11, 1985 the Soviet Union received a new president. This president was named Mikhail Gorbachev. He was a nice change to the past presidents the Soviet Union had. Over a course of time he signed treaties and policies to bring peace back and eventually end the Cold War.
