  • First atomic bomb

    The bomb was droped in order to save American soldiers from dying, But since the bomb was droped, it launched the world into the nuclear era.
  • Gouzenko Affair

    On Sept. 5, 1945, just after the end of the Second World War, a Russian cipher clerk named Igor Gouzenko fled the Soviet Embassy in Ottawa with 109 documents proving the existence of a Soviet spy ring in Canada. His revelations reverberated throughout the world and helped to ignite the Cold War.
  • Formation of the United Nations

    The United Nations was the second multipurpose international organization established in the 20th century that was worldwide in scope and membership. The Legue of Nations was disbanded in 1947.
  • Formation of NATO

    In 1949, the prospect of further Communist expansion prompted the United States and 11 other Western nations to form the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)
  • Korean War

    The Northern half of Korea wanted to take over the Southern part of the land.
  • Warsaw Pact

    The Warsaw Pact was a collective defense treaty among eight communist states of Central and Eastern Europe in existence during the Cold War.
  • Start of the Vietnam War

    The Northen half of Vietnam had a communist goverment while the South did not. The Soviet Union backed up the North and the Americans had backed up the South.
  • Suez Crisis

    There was a military and politcal confrontation in Egypt threating to have a conflict between the United States and the British.
  • Formation of North American Air Defence

    An agreement was announced that a new organization was to be formed between Canada and the United States to be known as NORAD or the North American Air Defence Agreement.
  • The Cancellation of the Avro Arrow

    Not long after the 1958 start of its flight test program, the development of the Arrow was abruptly halted before the project review had taken place, sparking a long and bitter political debate.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    13-day political and military standoff in October 1962 over the installation of nuclear-armed Soviet missiles on Cuba.
  • Salt Treaty

    Nixon and Soviet General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev signed the ABM Treaty and interim SALT agreement on May 26, 1972, in Moscow. For the first time during the Cold War, the United States and Soviet Union had agreed to limit the number of nuclear missiles in their arsenals.
  • Strategic Defense Initiative

    The Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), also known as Star Wars, was a program first initiated on March 23, 1983 under President Ronald Reagan.
  • The Fall of the Berlin Wall

    After decades of partition, East Berliners surged through cheering and shouting and were greeted by West Berliners on the other side. Ecstatic crowds immediately began to climb on top of the Wall and destroy segments of the concrete fort.
