Signed by Harry Truman, the docterine asked for $400 million in military and economic assistance for Greece and Turkey. It would guide US diplomacy for the next 50 years. Furthermore, it aided noncommunisrt countries in resisting expansion by the Soviet Union. It was a big step at the beggining of the war as it aided Greece and Turkey to stop the spreading of communist. -
The Berlin Airlift
After WW2, Germany was split into two halfs with the west part of germany able to enter the east but they can not return. The so called "crisis" started in 1948 when the Soviet Union started putting blockades on railroads, water, and roads. As a result Western Germany decided to fight back by lifting food and feul to Berlin. It is connected to the Cold War as this is the time when the Berlin Wall was put up and it is said to be a defining artifact of the Cold War. -
Creation of the Warsaw Pact
The Warsaw Pact was a mutual defense organization that put the Soviet Union in command of all armed forces. This Pact included the countries of Soviet Union, Albania, Poland, Romania, and Hungary, just to name a few. It remained intact until 1991. During that time East Germany left the pact to join with West Germanny in the NATO. The creation of the Warsaw Pact and NATO were the causes for the Cold War. -
Vietnam War
The Vietnam War was a conflict between North Vietnam and South Vietnam, and was coined to be one of the longest wars in history, until the Afghanistan War in 2002. This conflct was brought up when the north and south were split into two, along the 18th parrallel. Sortly after the end of the war, the south vietamese government collapsed and vietnam was united as one. This war can be considered a proxy war of the Cold War as the Soviet Union and The US did not get directly involved in war. -
Bay of Pigs Invasion
Is the period between 1961 through 1991 in which the CIA tried to overthrough Castro. The plan failed which cause the United States as Castro used his power of overthrowing the "Yankee Imperialists" to his advantage. It is connected to the Cold War as it was one of the proxy wars that were fought. It also should the other countries in this war that Cuba was serious about winning -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis started when missiles were secretly shipped to Cuba. Then there was information to the Americans that a nuclear war was going to happen. Black Saturday was a day during the 13 day missile crises when it was at its peak. It began with a shooting down of a U-2 spy plane. The conflict was resolved when the Soviet Union was split apart and Castro had to give the thrown to his younger brother. This relates to the Cold War as Castro wanted to show that he can not be overthrown -
The Six Day War
At the beggining of the war the eygptian demanded that the UN peace-keeping force evacuate at once. The United Nations for some reason did not agree. Then there was the establishment of 5 casus belli, agreements about laws being threating to the compitition. Finally, Eygpt lauched an invasion via the Gaza Strip which resulted in Isreal offered to
returned conquered land in exchange for peace. -
Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty(SALT)
Was a treaty formed between the Soviet Union and the United States, that was trying to control the use of nuclear weapons. Furthermore it limited the number of ABM sites that each country could have. Also, it was made clear that the number of subranies need to stop. The Treaty was passed by a landslide. This relates to the Cold War as it was trying to stop the build up of the nuclear weapons.
