    FDR, Churchill and Stalin, "The Big Three" meet to discuss the Allied war effort against Germany and Japan and try to settle some nagging diplomatic issues. While a number of important agreements were reached at the conference, tensions over European issues oreshadowed the crumbling of the Grand Alliance that had developed between the United States, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union during World War II.
  • Atomic Bombs Dropped

    U.S. drops atomic bomb on Hiroshima, killing about 80,000 people. Three days later, they drop another on Nagasaki, killing about 70,000 people.

    This is aslo known as McCarthysim. When McCarthy started the "witch hunt" for communists in America. It is known as a scare because anyone and everyone was getting accused of being communist and a spy, and people were scared for their lives, and scared of being accused for a crime, being communist, that they did not do. Later, people realized McCarthy's overreaction, and FDR eventually fired him from his position.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    Stalin supported North Korea who invaded South Korea equipped with Soviet weapons. North Korea was communist, and the U.S. supported South Korea and fought to stop communism from spreading to the South part. During this time, the U.S. backed and allied with the South of Vietnam. The North and South were divided by the "17th Parallel" which is latitude 17 degree sN, which was the demarcation line between the two.
  • WARSAW Pact

    WARSAW Pact
    The Soviet Union and seven of its European satellites sign a treaty establishing the Warsaw Pact, a mutual defense organization that put the Soviets in command of the armed forces of the member states. It included the Soviet Union, Albania, Poland, Romania, Hungary, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Bulgaria as members. In response to the U.S.'s NATO.

    Missiles are found in cuba, U.S. officials recieve photo, and prepare to go to war, Khrushchev and Kennedy communicate by letters, and Khrushchev backs off after Kennedy declares that they will not invade Cuba. This was over a timespan of Oct 22-28th.
  • Gulf of Tonkin Resolution

    Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
    On Aug. 2nd and 4th, Vietnamese torpedos attacked U.S. destroyers. In response to this, President Lyndon Johnson presented a resolution to Congress, who approved and supported the determination of the President to take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the forces of the United States. Many people view(ed) this as a declaration of war on Vietnam.
