Gouzenko Affair
- Igor Gouzenko was assigned to the Soviet Embassy in Ottawa
- There were several Soviet spynetworks in Canada and other western countries who want the secrets of the atomic bomb
- Gouzenko, disappointed with his Soviet life, decided to expose documents and work of the Soviet spies to Canada
- He was not taken seriously at first
- In the end, Gouzenko provided Canada with the names of 18 Soviet spies

Berlin Blockade
The Berlin Blockade- The Soviet Union broke an agreement with its former allies ( United States, Canada, France and Britain)
-Wanted allies to occupy the wester part of Berlin
-The Blockade placed the Soviet Union was unsuccessful because the allies provided supplies to those in West Berlin -

- NATO was formed by by Belgium, Britain, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal and the US to defend each other from enemy attack

The Korean War
The Korean War- North Korea, supported by China, began to attack South Korea
- The United States supported South Korea
- Wheb the US go involved, so did the UN
- The UN called apon its members to assist South Korea
- Canada was one out of the 16 countries who got involved
- 25 000 Canadians saw action
- 406 Canadian were killed and 1000 wounded
- After some defending, the UN wanted to ensure the independence of South Korea
- To do this, they negotiated and then came to a truce

- The agreement came into place in 1953
-To ensure that the truce was being followed, Canadian troops were asked to stay in South Korea until 1955 -

- Israel attacked Eygpt with the support of Britain and France
- A Canadian man, Lester Pearson (secretary of state for external affairs) had a solution

Avro Arrow and its Cancellation
- The Avro Arrow was a supersonic jet which was scrapped by John Diefenbaker
- In its place he ordered American Bomarc missiles
- This frustrated many Canadians because 14 000 had lost their jobs to build the jet

Sputnik and Canada's Space Program
Launch of Sputnik - There was a race between the US and USSR to see who could get their satellite into space first
- Soviets wished to launch the first Sputnik satellite
- The rocket that was needed for the launch could also be used to lauch a nuclear warhead anywhere in North America
- North American feared this so they organized drills for citizen's saftey -
Continental Alliances: NORAD and DEW
The Early Warning Radar System- Canada gave the Americans permission to build defences in the Northwest Territories which they called, Distant Early Warning (DEW)
- DEW would pick up approaching enemy aircrafts and missiles
- NORAD was located in Colorodo Springs and if DEW reported mysterious objects apporaching then they had to control/prepare the defenses and offensive weapons
- Some Canadians felt as if they were in the US' hands
- Others felt comfortable with the defensive plan -
Diefenbaker, Bomarc missiles and nuclear warheads in Canada
Nuclear Weapons in Canada- Diefenbaker deployed 56 American-made Bomarc missiles in Ontario and Quebec
- Controversy over whether the nuclear weapon should be deployed on Canadian soil
- More Controversy over the North American defence since the missile sites were along the Canadian border -
Cuban Missile Crisis
Kennedy speaks about the Cuban Missile Crisis- Some of the Soviet's missiles sites were located in Cuba
- From Cuba, the missiles could be aimed at North America more accuratley
- To prevent this, the US built a blockade around Cuba so the Soviet couldn't deliever the missiles
- The Canadian government suggested to examine the missile bases instead of blockade but the blockade continued
- The blockade was successful -

Paul Henderson Interview
- The Soviet team dominated international hockey for the past 10 years
- Faced the best Canadian hockey players
- Soviets won the first, fifth and fourth game
- Canada won the second, sixth, seventh and eighth game
- The third game was a tie
- Paul Henderson scored the winning goal in the final game -
Vietnam War & Draft Dodgers
- The war was between North Vietnam and South Vietnam
- The North was supported by it's communist allies which the South was supported by the US
- The reason why the US supported South Vietnam was becuase they wanted to prevent the spread of communism
- Canada did not fight in the war but they did aid the US government in suppying medical equipement, weapons-making material and technical assistance
- Draft dodgers were people who avoided fighting in the war since they didn't agree with it

Taking the Wall Down- When the Soviet split up, the Cold War was considered over
- The Berlin Wall that was placed by the Soviet Union was taken down
- This was important because the wall was a symbol of the Cold War -

- The Soviet Union seperated into 15 different countries
- North America was happy since there wouldn't be anymore enemy threats
- The Cold War had ended
- The split up reformed the political, economic and military alliances all over the world
