    In 1977Jimmy Carter the new elected President attempted to renegotiate the SALT II Treaty in order to reduce the number of Soviet Missiles. It took until 1979 for precise figures to be agreed and the SALT II treaty was signed by Brezhnev and Carter in June of that year.

    Soviet troops withdraw from Afghanistan
    In the first three-month period it was reported that some 50,183 foreign troops had withdrawn. Another 50,100 left between 15 August 1988 and 15 February 1989.The whole time during the withdrawal over the border troop convoys were coming under attack by Afghan fighters. In all 523 Soviet soldiers were killed during the withdrawal.
