  • The Marshall Plan

    The Marshall Plan
    The Marshall Plan was also known as the European Reconstruction Plan. The plan was worked on for four years. The United States plans were to rebuild areas destroyed during the war, remove trade areas, and to make industries more modern. This plan was named after the secretary of state George Marshall. Although the Soviet Union and its allies did not eccept this the US insisted. Many other organizations and plans helped with the financial end of helping Europe.

    The creation of NATO
    NATO stands for North American Treaty Organization, this is an intergovernmental military alliance. This is a system of defense in which all involved members agree to mutual defense on an attack from an outside country. Some countries after a while did drop out but many entered. In the begining their main goal was to keep the Russians out, and the Americans in.
  • The Korean War

    The Korean War
    This war took place when North Korea invaded South Korea. It took place because of the political views. North Korea was Democratic and South Korea was Republican. They formed the 38th parallel which was an imaginary line dividing North and South Korea. This war was the first conflict in the Cold War. The US aided South Korea and China aided North Korea. Fighting ended on July 27th 1950 due to the signing of the armistice agreement.

    The Rosenberg's were accused and found guilty of spying. They recieved the death penalty. They were accused of spying for the Soviet Union.
  • The creation of the Warsaw Pact

    The creation of the Warsaw Pact
    The warsaw pact is also known as "The warsaw treaty organization of friendship, cooperation, and mutual assistance". This was a defense system among the communist states. This was created after NATO almost as a copy but for communist countries instead. This was established under the Soviet Union. Economic and military forces available.
  • The Vietnam War

    The Vietnam War
    This war followed the First Indochina War. It was fought between North Vietnam aided by communist allies and South Vietnam aided by the US and other anti-communist countries. The US claimed their involvement in the war was to prevent the spreading of Communism. There was a Peace agreement signed but fighting continued. The US stopped their involvement on August 15th 1973, due to an amendment passed by US congress. The capture of Saigon by Vietnam Army marked the end of the war.
  • The Bay of Pigs

    The Bay of Pigs
    The Bay of Pigs was an unsuccessful invasion on Cuba. The CIA was given permission by President Eisenhower and President Kenedy to train Cuban exiles, in hope that eventually Castro would be overthrown.On April 17th, 1400 Cuban exiles landed on the coast (the Bay of Pigs). A group sent to distract Castro's forces never reached shore. Many Cuban exiles were taken as prisioners by Cuban forces. Kenedy and Castro ended up negotiating.

    The Berlin wall goes up
    Rumors were spread that there may be a tightening between East and West Germany. Nobody believed it when workers started building a wall on the border of East and West Germany and they were not allowed to cross the border. There was an expected 60,000 people moving to West Germany until the wall was built. Some people had family across the border and they were not allowed to even see their family.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    The cuban missile crisis took place with the Soviet Union and Cuba on one side and the US on the other. This was one of the major small wars that make up the Cold War, this was the closest the world has come to a nuclear war. After political changes and failed attempts to overthrow the Cuban government there was an idea to place nuclear missiles in Cuba to prevent invasions. The US found cites in which Nuclear plants were being made, which started the 13 day conflict.

    This war was fought from June 5th- June 10th 1967. It was fought between Isreal and countries around Egypt. This war started by Isreal launching surprise bombs on Egypt. Within 6 days Isreal had won a war for land. Isreal had taken over the Gaza strip and the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt.

    The US sends a man to the moon
    This was an ongoing competition between the United States and the Soviet Union. The United States made it to the moon before any of the other countries. This competition was also known as the "space race" the countries tried to get as much technology into the space before any other countries. The man who first stepped foot on the moon was Niel Armstrong.

    This game was marked as the most controversial game in olympic history. This was the first time that the US did not take the gold in the olympic basketball game. They ended up taking the silver after loosing to the Soviet team taking gold.
  • Olympic Hockey Game

    This hockey game took place in the 1980 winter olympics at Lake Placid in New York. The United States team defeated the Soviet team. This game was named "a miracle on ice". The Soviet team was the biggest rival in the winter olympics. The US team took gold and the Soviet team took silver defeating Sweeden.

    The Berlin divided West Germany from East Germany due to communism. After the wall was put up there were signs of communism weakening, the "communist government" of East Germany felt they needed a small change and the people disagreed.East Germans wanted to move to West Germany.The guards at the checkpoints began to allow people across the border.
  • The collapse of the Soviet Union

    The collapse of the Soviet Union
    The Soviet Union was ran from 1982-1991, about 11 days before the fall of the Soviet Union many countries gathered for a meeting and told the leaders they did not want to be apart of the Soviet Union anymore. Some countries had already gained independence from the USSR. The leader was so dissapointed in his turnout he decided to resign from his position on December 25th, this marked the end of the Soviet Union. It was a relief for many people.
