By the time he was eighteen he was working in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as the private secretary to a railroad official named Thomas Alexander Scott. -
he started his first steel mill, and by 1899, when he consolidated into the Carnegie Steel Company he controlled a quarter of American iron and steel production. Two years later he retired.
