  • The Berlin blockade

    The Berlin blockade
    The Soviet Union tried to limit the ability of France, Great Britain and the US to travel to their parts of Berlin. Guards on the east German border began slowing the entry of western troops trains bound for Berlin. Over 321 days Western Fliers made 272,000 flights into western Berlin delivering thousands of tons of supplies every day. Approximately 200 people were killed while trying to escape.

  • NATO was formed

    NATO was formed
    It stands for north Atlantic Treaty organization. Its purpose is to protect its members. The 28 members are countries bordering north Atlantic Ocean. It was established after World War II as part of the United Nation. During the Cold War the NATO wanted to prevent nuclear war. It adopted the massive retaliation policy which would use nuclear weapons if the Warsaw Pact attacked.
  • North Korea invades South Korea

     North Korea invades South Korea
    This initiated the first armed conflict of the Cold War. United States troops helped out South Korea. The war lasted three years and 50,000 Americans died. The United States was the main source of financial and military help for South Korea. The Korean War was the first limited war where the United States was trying to defeat the enemy but with the limited goal of protecting South Korea. This was the only way to avoid another world war.

    The first hydrogen bomb test
    The United States was going to be that hydrogen bomb after World War II the Soviet successfully detonated an atomic bomb. The bomb was 1000 times more powerful than an atomic bomb. It was the first thermonuclear nuclear bomb. It was equivalent to 10,400,000 tons of TNT.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

     Brown v. Board of Education
    Kansas' representative/plaintiff was Oliver Brown. He claimed that segregated schools violated the Constitutions equal protection clause because black schools were never equal to white schools. Racial segregation of children in public schools violated the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment " knows they shall make or enforce any law which shall... Deny to person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws."
  • The Warsaw Pact

    The Warsaw Pact
    A mutual defense organization that put the Soviets in command of the Armed Forces of the member states. The Soviet Union, Albania, Poland, Romania, Hungary, East Germany Czechoslovakia, and Bulgaria. They had to come to the defense of any member attacked by an outside force. They set up a unified military command.
  • Emmet till was murdered

     Emmet till was murdered
    He was a 14-year-old boy from Chicago. He was beaten, shot in the head and thrown into the Tallahatchile River because he whistled at a white woman. His mom had an open casket funeral because she wanted people to see what they had done to her son. The picture of his bloated and mutilated face was seeing around the United States and sparked civil rights movement. At first the two white murders were not found guilty but confessed a few months later.
  • Vietnam War

    Vietnam War
    The United States help non-Communist South Vietnam fight the invasion by communist North Vietnam. Over 58,000 United States troops died. 1 million civilians died. Hoping to stop the spread of communism in Southwest Asia, the United States sends aid and military advisers to help South Vietnamese government.
  • Rosa Parks was arrested

    Rosa Parks was arrested
    She was a 42-year-old seamstress and member of NAACP. She sat just behind the 10 seats reserved for whites, when the bus most full she was told to give up her seat for white man, she refused. She was arrested and convicted for violating the Jim Crow laws. Because of her there was a bus boycott. 75% of bus riders were black and the buses/ trains couldn't lose all that money so they integrated buses and trains.
  • Little Rock desegregation

    Little Rock desegregation
    Nine black students attempted to integrate Central high school in Little Rock Arkansas. On the first day of school there was mob of white people in front of the school. Gov. Orval Fabus had Arkansas's national guard stand outside not allowing the students in. Fabus closed all for public high schools because he didn't want desegregation but the Supreme Court made him reopen them.
