    Terrorists hijacked 4 airliners. The hijackers crashed two planes into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York. The hijackers also forced a third plane to crash into the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia. The fourth plane crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, in rural Somerset County after some passengers and crew tried to regain control of the plane after it flew toward Washington, D.C. None of the four planes survived.

    On March 11, 2004, a terrorist bomb attack targeted the suburban railway system in the Spanish capital Madrid. In this terrorist attack, a total of 191 people were killed and 2,050 were injured. This incident happened exactly 911 days after the 911 attacks in the United States. This is the day that the European Union commemorates the victims of terrorist atrocities every year since al-Qaeda launched the deadliest terrorist attack in European history.
