Ten Discoveries in Chemistry by Alec Espinosa

  • Oxyen Discovery

Leonardo Da Vinci was among the first to suggest tat air might be a compound instead of jut a single element. In the 18th century, scientists conducted numerous experiments to find different types of air , or gasses.
  • Atoms combine into molecules

Avogadro disproved the assumption that gasses are a single atom, discovering that they are made up of molecules. When scientists discovered that atoms can be combined into molecules, it enable them to create new compounds.
  • Electricity Transforms Chemicals

Electricity can be used on chemicals to transform them into anoother substance. Electrochemistry led to the development of solar panels, LED display, and rechargeable batteries.
  • Atomic Theory

In the 19th century Dalton proved that all known elements combined in definate and constant proportions. He hypothesized that the elements mustbe mde up ofsaller pieces of matter with relative and distinctive weights, or atoms. His atomic theory described the relationship between atoms and the elements. His discoveries helped further research and understanding about atoms and molecules
  • Synthesis of Urea

In 1828, it was discovered that inorganic compounds can be combined to form organic compounds. This discovery was important because it disproved the the theory that inorganic and organic compounds are different from eachother.
  • Atoms have signatures of Light

Bunsen discovered that different elements display different colors when placed in a flame. The colors were used to determine what specific elements are present in a compound. Bunsen also discovered the presence of sodium in the sun during his spectrum scope experiment.
  • Periodic Table of Elements

A russian chemist made cards for every single one of the different elements to try and place them in similar groups. He discovered that the elements fit into 7 different groups containing similarities. An early periodic table led to the discoveries of other elements that had not been found before.
  • Radioactivity

In 1890 X-Rays were discovered. Beckrell discovered radioactivity in Uranium. Rutherford found that radioactivity decays over time. Radioactivity has given us numerous scientific advancements.
  • Electrons form Chemical Bonds

Lewis discovered that molecules contain shells with electrons inside. Each shell allows only a certain number of electrons. Two elements may combine if they either give up or recieve electrons. This discovery enabled chemists to start creating millions of new chemical compoounds.
  • Plastics

John Hyatt discovered how to turn cellulose into plastic. Plastics are polymers, which are long chains of monomers.
