Dr. Manette is released from the Bastille after 18 years in prison and hidden by Defarge. Dr. Manette returns to London with his daughter Lucie and Jarvis Lorry.

- Charles Darney is tried and acquitted of treason in London.
- In Paris, Marquis St. Evrémonde runs over and kills Defarge's son. - That same day, Darnay meets with the Marquis, who is his uncle, and denounces his family name.
- The next day, St. Evrémonde is found murdered.
