    letter to Sarah On July 14th, 1861, Sullivan sent a letter to his wife Sarah that became a very famous letter. In the letter to his wife he tried to express his love for his wife and his country. A week after the letter was written, Sullivan died from a cannon ball injury received in battle. The letter never got to Sarah.

Their general had them march into Virginia from D.C. with the goal of taking over the Confederate capital of Richmond (about 90 miles away from D.C.). About 25 miles into the march they met 32,000 confederate troops at a creek known as Bull Run.

He was standing in the middle of the battle like a stone wall trying get his point across that he has courage to fight the Union. This is how he got his famous nickname "Stonewall Jackson".

    While in the Battle of Bull Run, a cannon ball was fired from the Confederate Army hitting Sullivan critically wounding him. Sullivan was riding his horse at the front of his regiment when the cannon ball was fired and riped off his leg and killed the horse instantly.
