  • Moving to Queensland

    Bob and Lyn Irwin started the Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park. Steve Irwin got his first taste of reptiles by growing up around them. Steve took part in animal feeding, care and maintenance. On his sixth birthday, he got a 12-foot scrub python as a birthday present.
  • Wrestled his first crocodile

    He began handling crocodiles at the age of nine after his father had educated him on reptiles from an early age. Also at age nine he wrestled his first crocodile, again under his father's supervision.

  • The Crocodile Trapper

    After graduating he moved to Northern Queensland to become a crocodile trapper. Trappers capture crocodiles in areas near human habitats. Steve performed the servie for free, on the basis that he could keep the crocodiles for his park. He eventually followed his father's footsteps and became a volunteer for the Queensland Government's East Coast Crocodile Management program.
  • The Australia Zoo

    As Steve grew older, he took over management of the Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park. Steve renamed it the Australia Zoo in 1992. With his father, they could boast that every crocodile at the Australia Zoo (numbering over 150) was either caught with their own hands, or bred and raised at the zoo.

    Steve met American Terri Raines during a performance at the Australia Zoo. The two became romantically involved, and Steve married Terri Raines in June 1992, in Eugene, Oregon. Their honeymoon was shot by John Stainton, and this footage became the first episode of "The Crocodile Hunter."
  • "The Crocodile Hunter" hits the air

    "The Crocodile Hunter" hits the air
    Working with his friend and television producer John Stainton, Steve got his first shot at showing his diverse talents to the world. They made "The Crocodile Hunter" in 1992. In 1996, the show airs in Australia. One year later it is in North American TV, playing on the Animal Planet channel. The show is a tremendous success. Over the next three years, there are over 70 episodes of "the Crocodile Hunter" (1996), 53 episodes of "Croc Files" (2000) and 43 episodes of "Croc Diaries" (2002).

    Steve worked with Mark Strickson to create another program, "The Ten Deadliest Snakes in the World". By this point, the "The Crocodile Hunter" was broadcast in over 137 countries, reaching 500 million people.
  • Bindi Sui Irwin Born

    Bindi Sui Irwin Born
    Steve's daughter, Bindi Sui Irwin, was named after two of Steve's favorite animals: Bindi, a saltwater crocodile, and Sui, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier who died in June 2004.

    Steve was awarded the Centenary Medal for his "service to global conservation and to Australian tourism".
  • Wildlife Warriors: Conservation Foundation

    Originally called the Steve Irwin Conservation Foundation, the Wildlife Warriors was established in 2002 to educate people in the protection of injured, threatened and endangered wildlife.
  • Rescue in Mexico

    While Steve was filming a documentary on sea lions off the coast of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula, he heard on the boat radio that two scuba divers were reported missing in the area. Irwin and his crew suspected operations to aid in the search. His team's divers searched with the rescue divers, and Steve used his boat to patrol the waters. On the second day of the search, kyakeres found one of the divers. Steve and a crewmember escorted him to Steve's boat. The other diver was found dead.

    As a part of the United States' "Australia Week" celebrations in January 2006, Irwin appeared at the Pauley Pavilion, UCLA in Los Angeles, California. During an interview on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Irwin announced that Discovery Kids would be developing a show for his daughter, Bindi Sue Irwin.[10] The show, Jungle Girl, was tipped to be similar to The Wiggles movies, with songs that surround a story. A feature-length episode of Australian kids TV show The Wiggles entitled "Wiggly Safari

    When Bob was just over one month old, he became the center of a small controversy. In January 2004, Steve hand-fed a chicken carcass to a saltwater crocodile. The infant was close to the crocodile, and child welfare groups, animal rights groups, and some viewers criticized Steve as irresponsible. Steve refused to apologize for the incident, and held that neither he nor his son were in any danger.
