    British Philosopher, author, and educator Stephan Toulmin was born in London, United Kingdon on March 25, 1922. In 1943, he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from King's College where he later earned his Master of Arts and PhD in philosophy.

    After getting his PhD from Cambridge University, he went on to publish his first book "An Examination of the Place of Reason in Ethics". While being appointed University Lecturer in Philosophy of Science, he wrote his second book "The Philosophy of Science: An Introduction". After returning back to England and serving as a Professor at University of Leeds, he published his most influential book "The Uses of Argument".

    The Toulmin model of Argument was created in 1958 from his book "The Uses of Argument". The model is used for developing, analyzing, and categorized arguments. The model consisted of six parts which including: claim, data, warrant, backing, modality, and rebuttal. A question that produced the model was " What is it that makes arguments work? The purpose of the model was to criticize the assumptions made in a philosophical manner.
