Stephen Jay Gould attended Antioch College and graduated in 1963. Directly afterward he enrolled at Columbia University to obtain his Ph. D. in paleontology.

In 1967, Gould graduated with his Ph. D. from Colombia University, taking a post in the same year as a professor at Harvard, where he would remain for any years.

in 1972 Gould (with help from Niles Eldredge) introducted the theory of punctuated equilibrium. Oppossed by many, this theory was developed after Darwins theory of evolution, but contrary to it, Gould believed species evolved rapidly and over a short period of time instead of slowly over many years as believed Darwin.

After holding his post for several year, Gould obtained a full-time teaching post at Harvard.

From the year 1974 throughout the rest of his life, Gould became a regular contributor to Natural History where his major articles "Ever Since Darwin," "The Panda's Thumb," and many other essays he wrote were published.

In 1999, Gould became President of The American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Stephen Jay Gould died on May 20, 2002, in New York, New York. He is remembered fondly by all the friends he made and influenced throughout his career and lifetime.
