  • Atomic Explosion

    Soviet Union explodes its first atomic device, First Lightning, in Kazakhstan. The Soviet Union recognizes the Communist government in China.

  • Korean War

    The Korean War begins; the Cold War continues.

  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Soviet Union places missiles in Cuba, 90 miles away from US borders.

  • SALT-2
