Sir Humphrey Gilbert was born on 1539 in England, United Kingdom.
He was the second son of Otho Gilbert and Katherine Champernowne. -
Gilbert went to the Eton College and University Of Oxford where he learned to speak French and Spanish and studied war and navigation.

After the assassination of Shane O'Neill in 1567, Sir Humphrey was appointed Governor of Ulster and served time as a member of the Irish Parliament.

In 1570 Gilbert married Anna Ager, who would bear him six sons and one daughter.

He went to start a colony along the Atlantic Coast, north of Florida. He took five ships and headed to Maine. He was hoping to find a gold mine or Northwest Passage in the new lan.

One failure of Sir Humphrey was when he sunk his ship named 'The Squirrel', his smallest boat, on the way back to England. The boat sank due to rough weathers and rocky seas.

Sir Humphrey's time of death was, as previously mentioned, on the way back to England on the Squirrel. The Squirrel got dragged under by the monstrous waves, and he was dragged along with it.
