Sheldon Allan Silverstein was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 25, 1930

Shel joined the army in 1950. He was not a good soldier because he had trouble listining and following directions. While enlisted, he started drawing cartoons for Stars and Stripes magazines. It mostly made fun of the instructors but everyone got a good laugh out of it.

After Shel's army stilt was over, he found a job drawing cartoons for Playboy magazine. His cartoons were also featured in other magazines like Look and Sports Illustrated, but mainly in Playboy.

Shel starts to write and sing music

Ursla Nordstorm convices Shel to start writing childrens peopms. He quickly comes out with the giving tree, which later would become his most popular book.
