  • Russian Revolution

    Russian Revolution
    More specifically, the Russian Revolution was a string of revolutions. Led at first by socialists, riots and mutinies, strikes and protests were common. Eventully, the bolsheviks political takeover involved Leader Vladimir Lenin. The totality of the takeover came with militia turned peasants and was sealed with the forming of the Red Guards.
  • Hollywood 10

    The "Hollywood 10" were a group of actors responsible for the short film of the same name. Hollywood 10 was a denoucment of McCarthyism, HUAC, and everything in between.
  • The Iron Curtain

    The Iron Curtain
    The establishment of satellite countries, or the "Eastern Bloc" by the Soviet Union, and "The Iron Curtain" by the U.S; is what caused the drama of global politics. The countries :Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and East Germany were all converted into communism; this caused the biggest upset in East Germany, causing the country to be split for decades.

    Also known as the Yalta Conference or the Argonaut Conference, the main goal of the meeting was to establish Europe's post war organization. The meeting is note worthy as being host to the famous photograph of Churchill, Rosevelt and Stalin all sitting by one another.

    A very important U.S doctrine that stated that the U.S was to send aid to any power contesting the U.S.S.R. This was recognized as an open act of war by the soviets. This doctrine officialy stated to the Russians that the U.S. was hostile; important to note hostile does not mean "at war with".

    Evil communist counterpart twin to the Marshal plan. Established Comecon, a communist global aid program. And a pathetic one, the same countries they provided aid to they also demanded reparations from.
  • Marshall Plan

    Marshall Plan
    Officialy known as the European Recovery Program; the program caused the U.S. to spend 12 billion dollars in aid to western governments damaged by the coldwar. Valued today at 120 billion in todays inflated market.
  • Berlin Blockade and Airlift

    The Soviets had the ball in their court, cutting off the allies land and river access to Berlin, the city was falling and thousands of civilians were in danger. From June 4 1948 – 12 May 1949, the siege would see victory. However, in an epic feat of soviet failure, over 200,000 airlifts by allied forces would save the city, break the blockade, and win an allied victory. I call it failure because the soviets would watch the planes land and leave without engagement, for fear of "open conflict",
  • Alger Hiss Case

    Alger Hiss was an American talk show host who testified under HUAC and was not charged. He was retried with new evidence but ounce again was not convicted, he would later sue for media defacement.
  • Nato Founded

    Nato Founded
    The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, consisting of most of Europe and North America, is a collective defence coop between the allied nations. The countries are militarily aligned with NATO and respond to enemies of each other as though they themselves being attacked.

    When the Soviet Union was discovered to have nuclear capabilities, it meant that the U.S no longer had the tactical advantage over the red menace. It also meant that two enemy countries both had nukes, meaning that a nuclear war was now possible. Global diplomacy was forever changed by this event, especially the Soviet/U.S relations during the cold war.

    The death of Stalin, while made practically insignificant by the fact that he was replaced, was still a morale boost for the free world.

    The hearing were amidst Mcarthyism hysteria and featured Mcarthy and HUAC accusing everyone who wore red. That was a joke, but the baseless accusations by Mcarthy were not, those harmed peoples lives.

    The bloody korean war, also known as "The Forgotten War" was the first real battle between democracy and communism. It featured the genius amphibious behind enemy lines attack that drove North Korean forces back behind the 38th parallel. The day the cease fire was signed in Korea was the day a lot of bloodshed ended, though political problems exist to this day.
  • Battle of Dien Bien Phu

    The battle was between the French and the Viet Cong. The French Plan was to draw out VC and gun them down with superior fire power, as well as cut off the VC supply lines via paratrooper. Viet Cong merked the French with guerilla tactics however.

    The first battle for Vietnam vs an outside power. I consider this battle Vietnam's break from French control.

    Lasting from the 26th of April till the 20th of July in 1954, The Geneva Conference could be argued as the first step toward peace during the cold war. The conference aimed to restore peace and order in indochina, especially in Korea.
  • Warshaw Pact

    The Warsaw Pact is the name most commonly used to refer to the defense treaty between Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and the Soviet Union, which was signed in Poland in 1955. The Treaty was officially known as: The Treaty of Friendship, Co-operation and Mutual Assistance'. It can be remembered as the communist version of NATO

    The Suez Canal crisis was a conflict started by Isreal to remove the Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser from power. Also known as the Kadesh Operation, Isreal was backed by the U.K and France. The outcome was that Nasser's power increased and the invading powers embarrassed themselves.

    The Hungarian Revolution was a Nation-wide rebellion towards communism. The revolution was suppresed for over 30 years before democracy was revived.

  • Cuban Revolution

    The Cuban Revolution was the battle between Cuba and Soviet Russia for Cuba's independence. Cuba had originally been ruled under a dictatorship before rebel leader Fidel Castro began a coup againsed the established government.
  • U2 Incident

    America, in order to maintain their tactical position during the cold war, would fly spy planes over Soviet Russia's air bases to find out two things: if Russia had nukes, and if they were able to get them over to the U.S. When a U2 spy plane was shot down by Russian military, it revealed that the U.S had been spying, and that the pilot was dead. America scrambled with the diplomacy of the situation, changing the official explanation three times.
  • Bay of Pigs

    The Bay of Pigs incident was caused by invading U.S special forces into Cuba. The attack, if successful, would overthrow the increasingly communist government of Cuba, and it would also prove the effectiveness of Americas new special forces division. Fidel Castro himself led the defending Cuban forces. the challenge and defeated the invading Americans in just three days time. The aim was to topple the increasingly communist Cuban government and hopefully instead start it democratic.

    Perhaps the most tense moment of the Cold War was when America discovered that Russia had stationed Nukes in Cuba. America wanted to remove the missiles and stop additional weapons from entering Cuba. The Crisis nearly resulted in a nuclear war between Soviet Russia and the U.S. The conflict was dissolved by a U.S blockade.

    The fact that the two rivals of Earth had established a transcontinental telephone line meant that the peaceful relations were at an all time high. The official name, "Memorandum of Understanding Between the United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics Regarding the Establishment of a Direct Communications Link" is 25 words long.
  • Assassination Of JFK

    The shady assasination of JFK, we now know from declassified documents, can be reasonably assumed to be a inside job. Why? Well, JFK's body was taken to a morgue before autopsy where a trachiotamy- as well as other strange alterations, were made resulting in a botched autopsy. As well as physical evidence being ignored at the scene such as the bullet hole in the windshield. Even though we still have no solid proof it was an inside job, its is a FACT that there was more than one shooter.

    ORT was the USA's military strategy to win the war in Vietnam. Brainchild of Richard NIion, the strategy was ultimately expensive, and had no real impact (besides the ones the bombs had).

    The Tet Offensive was the invasion and capture of over 100 South Vietnam cities spearheaded by the VietCong. The offence was repealed and neutralized by American forces, however the U.S media saw it as a dangerous losing situation in Vietnam.

    The assassination of the biggest African American civil rights leader in history had a massive impact on the sociopolitcal climate for the worse. Widespread rioting and civil unrest were the result, however MLK's message of peace was not lost.

  • Invasion of Czechoslovakia

    The Invasion of Czechoslovakia was offically known as "Project Danube" . The attackers were 5 warshaw pact nations – the Soviet Union, Bulgaria, Hungary, East Germany and Poland.
  • DNC Riots

    The 1968 DNC was amid a year of intense rioting and unrest following MLK's assassination. The riot left 3 students dead and 15 injured.

    A protest was underway at Kent State University when the national guard fired into the crowd. The protest was againsed Vietnam. The National Guard killed 4 and injured 9.
  • Nixon Visits China

    NIxon's visit to China represented Americas willingness to make peace with China, but more importantly, begin diplomacy with a communist country. There had previously been 25 years of silence.

    The Fall of Saigon was the symbolic and litteral defeat and withdrawl of U.S forces in vietnam.
  • Reagan Elected

    America elects a former movie star under the motto "Make America Great Again", and somehow its a landslide vote and nobody is mad.
  • Berlin Wall

    Berlin Wall
    The Berlin wall was originally constructed by the communist party to stop communist Germans from escaping into capitalist Germany. U.S president Reagan held a speech on November 9th 1982 declaring that the wall should be brought down for the good of the people. Reagan's speech worked, and the toppling of the Berlin Wall is considered by many to be the first real start of the end...of the cold war.

    The Strategic Defence Innitiative, more commonly known as mutually assured destruction, was the threat that if Russia fired their nukes, then the U.S would fire theirs.
