He became a global icon through his film character, the Tramp, and is considered one of the most important figures in the film industry. His career spanned more than 75 years, from his childhood in the Victorian era until a year before his death in 1977, and included both praise and controversy. -

Gericault paints "The Raft of the Medusa"
Oil painting by the French Romantic painter Théodore Géricault. It is a large painting depicting a scene from the shipwreck of the French naval frigate Méduse, which ran aground off the coast of Mauritania on 2 July 1816. At least 150 people were set adrift on a hastily constructed raft, and all but 15 died during the 13 days it took to rescue them. -
