Within hours they obtained another court order to search the farm as part of the murder investigation. The police could only then charge him with a minor firearm contravention. He was released and put under police surveillance. A week or so later the police arrested and charged Pickton with two counts of first-degree murder.

Pickton was finally convicted of first-degree murder of the six women whose remains were found in his house. He was also sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole for 25 years.
