On the 24th of December 1915 Robert enlisted in the 42 Battalion at Longreach.

Robert was appointed to D Company 42 Battalion.

Between the 5th of June to the 23rd of July Robert travelled with his Unit on the HMAT 'Borda' A30 from Sydney to Southampton.

The 42nd Australian Infantry Battalion took part in the battle of Hamel in early July 1917.

Robert departed Southampton on the 2nd of March to go to France.

Robert was appointed Lance Corporal at Messines on 25 July 1917.

On 31 August 1917, Robert went to 11 Training Battalion in Durrington England to attend a rifle course to qualify as 1st Class with a working knowledge of the Lewis Gun.

Robert was then transferred to 9 Training Battalion at Fovant on 5 November 1917.

On 24 April 1918, at Bonnay near Amiens, Robert received a severe gunshot wound to his left leg necessitating his return to England to be admitted to hospital in Birmingham.

Robert was then transferred to Harefield.

Robert had some training at the Training Brigade in Hurdcott during the 7th to 22nd of August.

Robert again proceeded to France to join the Unit at Rouelles on 25 August 1918.

Robert was promoted to Lance Sergeant on the 20th of September 1918

In the battle for the Hienburg Line Robert was again severely injured with gunshot wounds in the left buttock and right hip.

Robert was admitted to the Military Hospital at Bethnal Green for his gunshot wounds.

Robert embarked on the 'Norvada' to return to Australia.

In 1923 Robert married Marie Gallagher .

The year after he got married Robert bought a lease on Wimmer's Soft Drink Factory and was said to have made the best Ginger Beer produced in stone bottles with a marble on top.

In 1938 Robert sold the lease to Jack Wimmer and moved to Brisbane.

On the 23rd of November 1950 Robert Mahoney died at the age of 55.
