Robert Cormier was born on January 17, 1925 in Leominster, Massachusetts.

When he was in the 8th grade, one of Cormier's teachers at the Catholic School he attended informed him that he was a "real writer." Sister Catherine, as she was called, was very impressed with Cormier's skill after reading one of his poems. Cormier believed her and thought of himself as a writer from that day forward.

Cormier's short story "The Little Things That Count" was published in a Catholic magazine called SIGN for $75.

Cormier attends Fitchburg State College for one year. Meanwhile, he begins writing for a local radio station and then for a newspaper.

Due to sexual references and profanity, THE CHOCOLATE WAR has been frequently challenged in different schools and libraries.

Cormier was worried that the complex novel would "alienate" his young adult audience. Instead, the novel proved to be a tremendous success! I AM THE CHEESE was made into a TV movie in 1983.

In 1985 Cormier published a sequel to THE CHOCOLATE WAR. The sequel received an Honor List citation from Horn Book Magazine.

Robert Cormier died of a blood clot in Boston, Massachusetts, in November of 2000.
