    Abraham Lincoln is the 16 president of the U.S. He is the first Republican to win a presidency. He only received about 40% of the electoral votes. He defeated Stephen Douglas, John Bell, and John C. Breckinridge.

    Lincoln was going to send a Emancipation Proclamation out before they won a victory. He thought the Confederate would think of it as a cry for help. So he waited until the Union won a victory. They eventually did and Abraham Lincoln sent it out for slaves to join their side.

    Hiram Rhodes Revels was seated as the first black member of the Senate, while Blanche Bruce, also of Mississippi, seated in 1875, was the second. Revels was the first black member of the Congress overall.
