    The Union treaty joined Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and the Transcaucasus into one country- the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union was first recognized by Germany in 1922 as well.

    The first 5-year plan is adopted, setting goals and priorities for the economy. This begins collectivization of agriculture and many riots and deaths.

    The Soviet Union was recognized as a nation by the League of Nations, which validated its status as an independent country.
  • Cold War

    Cold War
    Tensions were high after World War II, especially between the US and the Soviet Union. President Truman wanted to stop the spread of communism throughout Europe and lessen the Soviet Union's influence. This led to the Soviet Union losing control, and eventually led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

    The Berlin Wall
    To halt the fleeing of workers and intellectuals into West Germany, Soviet leader Nikita Khruschev recommends to East Germany to construct the Berlin Wall to close off access between East and West Germany.

    In the middle of the Cold War, the Soviets invaded an insurgent group in Afghanistan. The Soviet Union lost this war, which showed a decline in their power.
  • Fall of the Berlin Wall

    Fall of the Berlin Wall
    East and West Germany sever the tie between them by destroying the Berlin Wall. This is bad news for the USSR because it means that they have lost influence.

    All of the independent republics, including Russia, had already seceded from the Union, which led to 11 republics signing the Alma-Ata Protocol, declaring that the Soviet Union ceased to exist.
