  • Black codes

    The black codes are laws that helped control newly freed African Americans. Certain black codes made it illegal for African Americans to buy or borrow farms.Some other black codes allowed officals to fine or take African Americans to jail. Freed African American men and women thought the black codes were better than slavery. This relates to race because it stopped African Americans from doing certain actions.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1866

    Civil Rights Act of 1866
    This act allowed federal government power to get involved with state problems to protect African Americans' rights. The Civil Rights Act was meant to go to the Supreme Court in 1857. Then the Supreme Court ruled that African Americans were not citizans. This relates to race because African Americans are not citizans.

    The Reconstruction Acts (1 and 2)
    The 1st Reconstruction act states that some Confederate states that have not ratified the 14th amendment had to form new governments. Tennessee was the only southern state that ratified the 14th amendment could keep their government. Also, the 1st act let African American men vote. The 2nd act empowered the army to register people to vote in each district. Also, it helped the state organize constitutional conventions.

    The 14th Amendment
    The 14th Amendement states that if a state barred any grown male citizen from voting, that certain state could lose representtation from Congress. Also, this amendement states that no state can take the life of someone, liberty, or property without due of the law. Lastly, the 14th amendemnt excluded Confederate leaders from holding office, unless Congress told them to do it.
  • The 15th Amendment

    The 15th Amendment
    This amendment states that state and federal government could not stop the right to vote to any adult male. They couldn't stop any adult male to vote because of his color or his past condition of servitude. After this amendment was passed, Republicans had succeeded by giving African American men the right to vote.
