  • Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction

    Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction
    This proclamation was basically a rough draft made by Lincoln to start preparing for reconstruction. It pardoned all low ranking confederate troops and allowed states to rejoin the Union by having 10% of white males take a loyalty oath.
  • Wade-Davis Bill

    Wade-Davis Bill
    The Wade-Davis Bill required states to have 50% of their white males take a loyalty oath to be able to join the Union. It also made states to allow black males to vote.
  • Freedman's Bureau

    Freedman's Bureau
    The Freedman's Bureau was created to assist freed slaves with food, housing, education, health care, and employment contracts. It mainly oversaw former slaves' jobs, and eventually became a military court for legal issues.
  • The Assassination of President Lincoln

    The Assassination of President Lincoln
    President Lincoln was assassinated 5 days after Grant's surrender to Lee. He was murdered by John Wilkes Booth in Ford's theatre in Washington D.C.
  • Civil Rights Act

    Civil Rights Act
    This Act was created mainly for protecting the rights of African Americans after the Civil War. This gave any citizen the same rights and powers as white citizens.
  • Military Reconstruction Act

    Military Reconstruction Act
    One of the reconstruction acts, this act sent troops to rebuild southern governments and enforce the Civil Rights Act.
  • Tenure of Office Act

    Tenure of Office Act
    This act denied the president's power to remove executives from office that had been appointed by past presidents without consent from the Senate. This led to Johnson's Impeachment when he tried to forcibly remove Secretary of War Edwin Stanton from office.
  • Fourteenth Amendment

    Fourteenth Amendment
    This amendment defined citizenship, overruling scott vs. sandford which denied citizenship to all blacks. It also provided the Due Process and Equal Protection clauses.
  • Election of 1868

    This election was the first after the Civil War, with republican Grant winning over democratic Seymour. Johnson was replaced by Seymour because he had become so unpopular during his presidency and had been impeached.
  • Fifteenth Amendment

    Fifteenth Amendment
    This amendment was made to allow blacks to vote. It prohibits any U.S. government from denying a citizen's right to vote based on race, color, or if they were a slave.
  • Whiskey Ring

    Whiskey Ring
    The Whiskey Ring was a scandal involving politics to steal millions from the government. Over 110 perpetrators were jailed and over $3 million in taxes was recovered.
